Classification of blogs

Nowadays, blogging seems to be the new trend of communicating and publishing of news, issues, opinion they had on current event in the internet era. It could be classified in terms of subject matter such as politics, fashion, news, medical and sports. The advantage of this kind of classification is that it is easier for people to acknowledge the types of the blog. These blogs gathered those who had similiar interest in certain topic, they discuss and share information in this platform. One of the examples would be Wretchsalon, where people share their information on beauty.

Margaret Simons classified blogs into 9, one of them is digest blog where it normally collect and summaries material on a single topic and maybe some commentray also (ABC media report 2008).In my opinion, people will start wondering whether digest blog is talking about the digest system in human body or something else. This may eventually lead to confusion for people when determining the content of the blog.

Besides, blogs can be classified in terms of media types such as vlog, linklog, sketchlog, photolog, tumblelogs which basically use visual as the principal in the blog where there is limited text. Linklog basically showed a list of blog's link(URL) where people are able to link through those links.

Example of Vlog: Youtube

Example of tumblelog: Anarchaia

Example of photolog: Flickr

Example of Sketchlog

Classification on blog may be difficult due to the diversity of topics compared to text/web classification (Sun et al. 2007). Besides the line between each blog classification may be blur and overlap with each other. However, for the ease of use, the classification should use easy and clear terms where people can understand easily. In the end, classification created for easier recognition for readers or blogger when they try to find certain types of blog.
