Blogging Community

Blogging community is a connection network between all bloggers, it served as a connection tools where these bloggers can have their discussion and share their ideas with each other which showed to be an important role in internet era (White 2006). Blogs shared a blog community normally based on the similiar interests in certain topics or issues.(Carolyn Wei, n.d.) For instance, Xanga, BlogCatalog and MyBlogLog.

It can be created by setting up a comment section or chat box in the blog where bloggers can interactive with each other. Recently, twitter has become popular in building community, visitors can follow each other and comment with this application, and it further bound all the bloggers together. Besides, the existence of hyperlinks also assists in building up a blogging community. Here i found a new way to build blogging community, which is wibiya. It is a customize social toolbar where you can put the applications and services together in your blog, it actually consists od many features such as twitter, instant messaging, ability to share, search tools, navigation lists and it even provides a full tracking and management system where you can see the numbers of visitors, subscribed to RSS fees. (Coree, 2010)

Types of blogging communities

Blogging communities basically can be categorized in three types which are blog centric community which is manage by one owner but there may be more than one blogger writing the blog, topic centric community which is a network linked by a common passion or topic among bloggers and lastly boundaried community which is a collections of blogs and blog readers together maintain a single platform.(White 2006)

Example of blogging community

Diary addictions is a blog community where people can get information of fashion, it falls under the category of topic centric community. The formation of this community link bloggers together by using a common topic which the topic here is fashion and beauty. This form of community distributes its power and identity across the community.

The hyperlinks on diary addictions is how they connect to each others. Above figure showed the circle section is the hyperlinks in diary addictions(White 2006)

Classification of blogs

Nowadays, blogging seems to be the new trend of communicating and publishing of news, issues, opinion they had on current event in the internet era. It could be classified in terms of subject matter such as politics, fashion, news, medical and sports. The advantage of this kind of classification is that it is easier for people to acknowledge the types of the blog. These blogs gathered those who had similiar interest in certain topic, they discuss and share information in this platform. One of the examples would be Wretchsalon, where people share their information on beauty.

Margaret Simons classified blogs into 9, one of them is digest blog where it normally collect and summaries material on a single topic and maybe some commentray also (ABC media report 2008).In my opinion, people will start wondering whether digest blog is talking about the digest system in human body or something else. This may eventually lead to confusion for people when determining the content of the blog.

Besides, blogs can be classified in terms of media types such as vlog, linklog, sketchlog, photolog, tumblelogs which basically use visual as the principal in the blog where there is limited text. Linklog basically showed a list of blog's link(URL) where people are able to link through those links.

Example of Vlog: Youtube

Example of tumblelog: Anarchaia

Example of photolog: Flickr

Example of linklog

Example of Sketchlog

Classification on blog may be difficult due to the diversity of topics compared to text/web classification (Sun et al. 2007). Besides the line between each blog classification may be blur and overlap with each other. However, for the ease of use, the classification should use easy and clear terms where people can understand easily. In the end, classification created for easier recognition for readers or blogger when they try to find certain types of blog.

A new blogging world

Blogging has become a new phenomenon in today’s world; people use blogging for all kind of purpose. Blog has somehow become a new platform for people to share their opinion, idea and also personal experiences. According to blogosphere statistics, there are 133,000,000 numbers of blogs indexed by Technorati since 2002 and an average of 900,000 blog posts within one day. (Singer, A 2009)

However, the trend in various countries may be different. In Europe, Asia and Malaysia, personal and corporate blog still remain as dominant. However, popularity of politics blog has increasing especially in United States and Iran when during election. A statistic indicates that people relied more on traditional media rather than blogosphere during 2008 US presidential campaign, however, 60% of them believe that blogosphere will bring bigger impact in the future. This trend further spread to Malaysia where politicians and entrepreneurs use blogs to update their readers in terms of political issues. Furthermore, personal blogs showed to be a prevalent in Taiwan.

Benefits of blogs to community

In Malaysia, blogging may be beneficial to community as freedom of public speaking is scarce in a country like Malaysia, people start using blogs to discuss about politics issues where blog is able to provide free public speaking. A report showed that there will be proportion of the two million voters likely to change the way they get information and news from the mainstream media to websites and blogs in the future. (The Malaysian insider 2009) Besides, people believed that information on blogosphere was accurate and immediate compare to traditional media sources. People start to rely on blogs as they found that blogosphere’s impact is immediate and noticeable. (Sussman, M, 2009)
